Privacy
No accounts. No tracking. No data sent to servers we control. Here’s exactly what is stored and where.
What we collect
Nothing on a server. Places For Me has no backend database that stores anything about you. There is no analytics tracker, no advertising tag, no third-party tracker.
What lives in your browser only
The site uses localStorage on your device to remember a few preferences across visits:
- pfm_profile — your saved location (lat/lng + name) and chosen radius, used to sort resources by distance from you. Created only if you complete onboarding or set it later.
- pfm-theme — light or dark mode.
- pfm-textsize — whether you tapped A+ for larger text.
- pfm_org_role — if you used the For Orgs page and picked a role.
- quickhelp_stats — counts of which Quick Help branches you reached, used so we can see what people most often need.
Everything in this list stays in your browser. It is not transmitted anywhere. You can clear it at any time using your browser’s privacy settings, or by tapping “Clear my profile” in the profile drawer.
What goes outside your browser
A few things make outbound network requests:
- Map tiles — loaded from CARTO and OpenStreetMap when you open the map page. Standard map use, IP address visible to those services as with any web map.
- Geocoding — if you enter a town or postal code during onboarding, the text is sent to nominatim.openstreetmap.org to look up coordinates. We don’t see this request, and Nominatim doesn’t require an API key.
- Browser geolocation — if you tap “Use my location”, your browser provides coordinates to the page. They are stored in localStorage on your device only.
- Mailto links — tapping a “Suggest a resource” or “Email about a donation” link opens your own mail app. We only see what you send if you actually send it.
Phone calls
Tapping any number on the site opens your phone’s dialler. Places For Me has no involvement in the call. Carrier rates apply.
Data sources
Resource listings come from 211 Nova Scotia and direct outreach to organisations. We update the list manually. Always call ahead to confirm hours and availability before travelling.
